Salt air bleaches coastal cedar faster than anything inland. Grey grain, a chalky salt film and rails lifting off the post line are what exposure looks like — not what the end of a fence looks like. Wash it, reset it, oil it, and the color comes back.

The salt-air log
Condition, work, result — written down while the boards are open. Repair, restore and build all get the same three lines.
Cedar silvered on the weather side, pickets lifting, posts working loose in tidal soil.
Pulled the loose line, reset and sistered the posts, replaced what was split, set the run back to height.
Straight line, gate swinging clean, the original panels still doing their job.
Full salt film over an overlapped board-on-board run and no color left in the grain.
Washed the run down, let it dry in the coast air, then oiled it back board by board.
Cedar color returns, boards tighten up, and the fence reads new from the road.
Bare yard with no fence line and an open corner where the drive meets the property.
Set the posts, ran full-height cedar privacy, finished the corner with a tabby column and a cedar gate.
Full height, tight spacing between boards, a gate that latches clean against the column.
