Season by season

The exterior chore calendar for Penobscot County.

Maine puts a house through four very different kinds of weather. Here's the order most folks around here tackle the outside — do them in the right season and everything lasts longer.

Spring

April – May
  • Rinse the winter road grit off siding, steps and walkways.
  • Wash decks and railings before the first cookout.
  • Flush the gutters after the last big melt.

Summer

June – August
  • Keep pollen and tree sap off north-facing siding.
  • Brighten the deck before company arrives.
  • Touch up the driveway and walkway edges.

Fall

September – November
  • Clear the gutters after the leaves drop, before the hard freeze.
  • Wash the siding before the woodstove smoke settles in.
  • Rinse the deck and let it dry before winter covers it.

Winter

December – March
  • Knock snow off low gutters and keep an eye out for ice dams.
  • Note the stains on the north wall while they're easiest to spot.
  • Plan next season's washing while the ground is frozen.

Not sure what your house needs first? Send a photo and we'll tell you what we'd do — and what can wait another year.
