Hands shaping a spinning clay vessel on a potter's wheel

Boone, North Carolina — handmade pottery & classes

Shape something lasting.

Clay spins, hands shape, fire transforms — and you take home a piece of the motion.

01 — The collection

Every piece carries the turn of the wheel.

Mugs, bowls and vases thrown by hand in the Boone studio and glazed in copper and deep green. Uneven rims, a fingertip pressed into the foot — the marks of a piece made by a person, for a person.

  1. 01

    Mugs

Thrown and pulled by hand, sized for a long morning. Copper glaze pools at the lip.

  2. 02

    Bowls

Deep or wide, for soup, salad, and whatever the garden gives up.

  3. 03

    Vases

Bottles and bud vases in deep green, for stems cut short and carried inside.

  4. 04

    Custom orders

A set for a table, a gift, a shape you have in mind — tell us what you need.

02 — Find your form

Four forms off one turning wheel.

Mugs, bowls, vases and made-to-order pieces all come off the same wheel — thrown, trimmed and glazed by hand. The fifth seat at that wheel is yours.

Four forms, and a seat at the wheel for you.

03 — Classes

Take the wheel.

Small groups, real clay, and a wheel for every pair of hands. You throw, trim and choose a glaze — the studio handles the firing, and what you make goes home with you.

  1. 01

    Pick a day

Tell us the day that suits you and how many hands are coming.

  2. 02

    We hold your wheel

A wheel, clay and tools are set aside before you walk in.

  3. 03

    Hands in clay

Center, open, pull. The wheel does the spinning; you do the shaping.

  4. 04

    Take home your piece

Leave it to dry and fire, then collect it glazed and finished.

Pick a day

Classes run by arrangement in the Boone studio. Tell us when you would like to come, and how many hands are coming with you.

We will reply with the days that are open and what to bring.

04 — The studio

Thrown, trimmed, glazed and fired in Boone.

Redwing & Clay is a working pottery studio in the North Carolina mountains. Everything sold here was made here — weighed, wedged, thrown, trimmed, glazed and fired, one piece at a time.

Thrown

Clay centred on a spinning wheel, drawn up into a wall.

Trimmed

Foot turned and rim cleaned once the piece is leather-hard.

Glazed

Copper and deep green, dipped, poured and wiped back.

Fired

The kiln does the rest — the colour comes out of heat.

05 — Take it home

Take home a piece of the motion.

Shop what is on the shelf, or book a wheel and make your own. Either way you leave with something that came off the wheel.
