Build-a-Board
Start with a blank board and leave with a game nobody has played before. Draw the path, decide the rules, paint the pieces — we handle the messy parts and the drying rack.
Little Lantern Toy Shop · Iowa City
Board games, game nights, and good company in Iowa City.
01 — Game Night Calendar
Every week the shop turns into a table. Bring a game or borrow one off the shelf — the shelves are stacked and someone always knows the rules.
The long table comes out and the games come down off the shelves. Come solo, come as a four, or slide in beside someone else's table.
Games where the table wins or the table loses together. Good for players who would rather plot than compete.
Shorter games, smaller hands, and grown-ups who don't mind losing twice before lunch.
A story at the front of the shop, then a game that takes about as long as the story did.
Come with a game under your arm, or take one down off our shelves for the evening.
Tables mix. Slide in beside another group, or claim a corner for your own crew.
New to a game? Say the word and someone at the table will walk you through it.
02 — Birthday Registry
A registry at the Lantern works like a wish list with better pieces. Pick what you'd love to unwrap, and we keep the list on file so nobody buys the same puzzle twice.
Walk the shelves with us, or tell us the kinds of games your kid already reaches for.
Guests can ask at the counter what's still open — no duplicates, no guessing.
Everything stays behind the counter until the party, boxed and labelled with the name.
Registry gifts go out wrapped — paper, ribbon and a hand-written tag.
03 — Workshops
Hands-on sessions at the back tables. Real tools, real materials, and something to take home and play with.
Start with a blank board and leave with a game nobody has played before. Draw the path, decide the rules, paint the pieces — we handle the messy parts and the drying rack.
Sand it, paint it, name it. A session for small hands and patient grown-ups, working with the wooden pieces we keep in the big bin.
For anyone who hasn't played since they were a kid. We teach one game properly, then play it — no manual read aloud, no arguing about the fine print.
Tell us which session you're after and we'll look out for you at the door.
