Do we need a piano at home?
A keyboard with weighted keys is plenty to begin with. We'll tell you when an upgrade is actually worth the money — and what to look for in a used one.
Portsmouth · Kittery · Rye · Newington
Little Harbor is a Seacoast studio for private piano, violin and guitar lessons, plus preschool music classes. We keep the small wins — and the loud ones — where everybody can see them.
Recital moments
Every season we hang up the snapshots that matter: the bow that finally stayed straight, the chord that finally rang, the walk to the piano in front of everybody.
Before & after
Nobody starts out polished. Every student's timeline looks a little different, but this is the shape of a first year at Little Harbor — three instruments, three honest starting points.
Week one · Piano
Hands shaking. Plays three notes of "Hot Cross Buns," then looks up to check it was okay.
Recital night · Piano
Walks to the piano, plays the whole piece, takes a bow she didn't plan on taking.
Week one · Violin
The bow bounces, the scale squeaks, and the big question is how long until break.
Recital night · Violin
Holds one steady tone through "Twinkle" while her little brother watches from the front row.
Week one · Guitar
Fingertips hurt, one chord buzzes, and he grins anyway and asks to try it again.
Recital night · Guitar
Strumming a whole song with the group, keeping time on his own without looking down.
Pace varies — some students get there in months, some take a year. Nobody gets rushed.
Straight answers
Lessons should be easy to arrange and easy to understand. These are the three things parents ask most before a first visit.

How much should a beginner practice?
Short and often beats long and rare. Fifteen focused minutes four or five days a week moves a beginner along faster than an hour the night before a lesson.
What if my child is shy?
That is the most common way to start. The first few lessons stay low-pressure on purpose, and recital invitations go out when a student is ready for the room.

Lessons & prices
Private lessons run in half-hour slots, one student at a time. Preschool music is a group class for the wiggliest age group we teach, and recital prep mini-sessions are extra run-throughs for a student polishing a piece for the stage.
