Bridal alterations — Columbus, Ohio
Measure — Chalk — Pin — Sew — Press
Chalk first. Then pins. Then thread. Nothing about your gown is guessed at.
Hem & Honey works bridal alterations one station at a time — measure, chalk and pin, baste, sew, press — so you always know what has been done to your dress, and what happens to it next.
The line
Five stations sit on the same hem line. Each one leaves a different mark behind — chalk, pins, basting thread, permanent stitch, a pressed edge. Read down the page and you have walked your dress through the workroom.
You bring the gown and wear it the way you will wear it on the day — shoes, undergarments, all of it. We look at where the bodice sits, where the straps fall, how much length the hem is still holding, and whether the skirt has a train worth lifting. Nothing is marked yet.
The finished length gets chalked, then pinned in sections — a few inches at a time, all the way around — so the line stays level instead of drifting as the skirt moves. The bustle is planned here too: where the train lifts from, and how many points it takes to carry it without pulling.
Long basting stitches hold the new line in place so you can put the gown back on and move in it — walk, sit, turn, be held. Bodice seams come in at the sides a little at a time, and the bustle goes on with temporary ties until we know it carries.
Basting comes out and the permanent stitching goes in, section by section, pressed as it closes. Lace that has torn, gone thin or lost its shape is reworked by hand with thread matched to the piece, so the repair reads as part of the dress.
The gown is pressed and steamed in sections and hung to settle, so nothing is worked while it is still warm. You collect it on the day we agree, in the bag it will travel in, with the bustle points marked so someone can find them in a hurry.
The workroom
Your gown is worked on a stand, never in a pile. One section is pinned, basted, sewn and pressed before the next is opened, so the shape of the dress is never guessed at between steps.
Bring the shoes and the undergarments you will wear on the day. A hem is only as level as what you are standing in.
Booking
Fittings run by appointment only, so the stand is free and the workroom is quiet when you arrive. Choose the appointment you need and send your details; we confirm the slot and the deposit by reply.
Bring the gown, the shoes and the undergarments you will wear on the day to the fitting.
The last station
Alterations are the last thing on a long list and the first thing anyone sees. Book the first fitting early, and the line stays calm all the way to the door.
