Custom dining tables
One slab, one table. We choose the board for grain run and figure, then let the natural edge set the shape and the size.
Custom furniture · Lancaster, PA
Custom dining tables, built-in cabinetry, live edge furniture and restoration, made to order in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
Every slab has a direction. We read the grain run, the figure and the natural edge before a single cut is made, then draw the piece around what the board already is.

What we build
Most commissions start with a room and a rough idea of size. This is what we take on.
One slab, one table. We choose the board for grain run and figure, then let the natural edge set the shape and the size.
Benches, consoles, coffee tables. The waney edge stays on, and the base is built to fit underneath it.
Walls, alcoves, awkward corners. Measured in the room and fitted to it, rather than the room being fitted to the cabinet.
Loose joints, tired finishes, a table that has already earned its place in the house. We bring it back to working order.
Bring us the room and a rough idea. We’ll talk wood, scale and light before anything is drawn.
Not sure which of these you need yet?
Tell us about the roomHow it goes
Four steps, and you see the wood before it becomes anything at all.
The room, a rough size, and anything you have been looking at. A photo of the space helps more than a description.
You see the board before it is cut: its width, its figure, and where the natural edge runs.
A drawing of the top, the base and the fit, so you know what you are getting before we start.
Cut, joined and finished by hand, then brought into the room it was made for.
Selected work
Live edge tops, built-ins and pieces brought back into service. The detail is the whole point.
Every piece starts as a board on the rack and ends in somebody’s dining room.

In the shop
Hearth & Grain Woodworks is a custom furniture shop in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, building dining tables, cabinetry, live edge pieces and restorations to order.
We work from the board up. The grain run tells us which way a top wants to sit, the natural edge tells us where it ends, and the base is drawn last so it holds the piece without arguing with it.
