Harbor & Hearth is a leather workshop on the Mystic coast. We build belts, bags and wallets meant to be carried for decades — and we keep the ones you already own alive at the bench.
Hand-stitched · Mystic, Connecticut
A record of wear. Some of these pieces came back to the bench for mending; others have never left the hands that carry them. Here, patina is not damage — it is the point.
Cut from a single hide and worn through Connecticut summers and winters. The edges have gone near-black where the buckle sits, and the strap has taken the shape of the person who wears it.
Carried daily until the handles darkened to the colour of strong tea and the base softened into a slump. Nothing on it has failed. It has simply been used.
Built to a card count, a fold depth and a monogram agreed at the bench. Two years in, the seam is still tight and the corner has begun to round.
Items enter the archive when they show their history plainly. We photograph them in the same light and list what the leather has recorded — not how old it is, but where it has been touched.
A repair is a continuation, not a correction. Where a machine would cut out the old panel, we take the seam apart, save the leather that is still sound, and put it back with thread and an awl — by hand.
Belts, bags, wallets and straps come to the bench for worn edges, split stitching, tired hardware and straps that have given up. We also monogram — letter by letter, struck at the bench, on something new or something you already carry.
The mark of a repair stays visible. It belongs to the piece now, the way a mend belongs to a well-used coat.
At the bench — hand-stitching a strap, two needles, one thread.
Bring the piece in and we look at the wear together. We tell you what the leather can still carry, and what it cannot.
Stitches come out one at a time. The original holes are kept and reused wherever the leather allows, so no new line is punched beside an old one.
Replacement leather is matched to the original, cut by hand, skived to thickness at the bench, and stitched back into the seam.
Edges are burnished, the piece is conditioned, and the repair is left where it can be seen. It is part of the record now.
Tell us the object you have in mind. We answer with questions — about leather, thickness, hardware, size, and the monogram you want struck into it. Then it is cut, stitched and finished at the bench in Mystic.
A small group, a bench each, and a piece of leather you will ruin before you understand it. We teach hand stitching, edge finishing and the care of the leather you already own.
The bench before a workshop starts.
Leave your name and email. We write back with the next workshop on the calendar — seats are few, and the bench fills from the first reply.
