The damage report

What hail leaves behind

Hail rarely announces itself. It bruises, dents and loosens, and the damage often shows up weeks later as a leak or a failing window. Here is what we look for, in the order we look for it.

Granule loss

Hail knocks the mineral granules off the shingle mat and leaves bald patches. They don't leak today — they age the roof early and cut its life short.

Bruised shingle

A strike can soften the mat underneath without breaking the surface. You find it by feel: the spot gives under a hand, and the granules around it are loose.

Siding ding

Aluminium and vinyl take the hit as dents, cracks and chalking. Look low on the windward wall, where the hail came in sideways instead of straight down.

Window seal

A strike on the sash can break the seal between the panes. Fog or a film that won't wipe off the inside of the glass is the tell.

Tarp first if you're taking on water. Then the repair or the replacement, with the site swept clean when we leave.
