Stonework

Five materials, one ground.

What we work in, and how each one goes together — what it suits, how it is set, and where in a build it belongs.

Stone veneer being set on the exterior wall of a New Hampshire home

01

Stone veneer

Split-face and fieldstone veneer laid over block or frame — the face and weight of solid stone, sized to the wall you actually have.

02

Brick

Walls, chimneys and steps laid true and pointed clean, with joints struck to shed water rather than hold it.

Full-bed natural granite and fieldstone wall laid in tight courses

03

Natural stone

Full-bed granite and fieldstone, sorted and laid as the site allows — irregular faces, tight joints, no two walls alike.

04

Outdoor fireplaces

Masonry fireplaces and chimneys built for the yard — sized to the patio they sit on and drafted to draw properly.

05

Retaining walls

Walls that hold a slope and let it drain. Split granite and fieldstone set in courses over gravel, stepped back to the grade they are holding.

Held, drained, and built to stay put.

Method

How a job runs.

Four steps, in order, from the first walk around the property to the last stone washed down.

01

Walk the site

Start at the ground — the slope, the drainage, the wall that is already there and how you want to use the space.

02

Match the stone

Veneer, brick, granite or fieldstone, chosen to suit the house, the grade and the weather it will take.

03

Lay it out

Courses, openings and the fireplace footprint are worked out before the first stone is set.

04

Set the stone

Set, struck and cleaned down — joints that shed water and a work area left tidy.
