Eat your way through Charleston, one block at a time.

Coastal Bites runs walking food tours, chef-led tastings and market visits through the streets we walk every week. You eat where the city cooks, hear the culinary history behind each plate, and finish knowing Charleston by taste.

For anyone who has ever eaten standing up on a cobblestone street.

Chapter OneThe Recipe Cards

Three ways to walk it.

Every route is written up like a recipe card — what's in it, how the day runs, and who it suits. Pick the one that sounds like your afternoon.

Charleston on Foot

Chapter ThreeBack Matter

Notes from the kitchen.

The pieces of Charleston food history our guides keep coming back to, told between stops.

i.

Rice

Rice built Charleston. The wet fields around the city fed a trade that shaped the whole Lowcountry table — and the cooking here never let it go.

ii.

Benne

Benne seeds came to the Lowcountry from West Africa and stayed. You'll find them on wafers and worked into dishes all over the city.

iii.

Shrimp and grits

A Lowcountry breakfast that turned into a dinner. Grits, shrimp, and whatever the cook had on hand — the recipe changes kitchen to kitchen.

iv.

Gullah Geechee cooking

Rice, okra, greens and one-pot cooking run through Charleston's food, and that thread is the one our guides follow most closely.

Ask your guide for the long version. This is a walking tour, not a lecture.
