01 — The spine
Most of it sits behind brick and never gets looked at. Here is the order we work in, from the cap down to the firebox, with what each layer costs to put right.
Cap & crown
A Level 2 inspection goes past what a sweep can see from the hearth — the crown, the cap, the flashing line and the full run of the flue. It is the right starting point on a chimney that is new to you, or one that has not been opened up in a while.
Exterior masonry
The outside of a chimney takes the weather: moss, staining, nesting debris and mortar that has started to give. Exterior cleaning covers the stack from the cap down to the roof line, including the crown.
Flue liner
The liner carries every flue gas out of the house. Cracks, open joints, or a liner sized for a different appliance are what we look for. If it needs replacing, the quote is written after the flue has been seen and measured.
Firebox & damper
The sweep itself: the flue brushed with the right size brush, the smoke chamber cleared, soot and creosote taken off the firebox and damper, and the damper checked through its full travel. Drop cloths down, mess contained, debris hauled away.
Wood stove
Stoves get their own pass. The flue connector and stovepipe come apart, the baffle and firebox are cleared, and the door seal and gaskets are checked before everything goes back together.
02 — On the roof
A standard wood-burning sweep is a top-down job. The work runs in the same order every visit, so nothing gets skipped and nothing gets left on the hearth.
Brushed from the top with a brush sized to the liner, so the walls are worked rather than just the middle of the channel.
Soot cleared from the chamber above the damper, and the damper run through its full open and close to check it seats.
Swept and vacuumed, not just brushed through — ash and creosote come out of the corners with the rest of the debris.
Checked for cracks, loose mortar and anything a bird or a squirrel has pushed into the opening over the season.
What we found, what we did, and what is worth watching before next winter. No scare tactics — just the state of the chimney.
Ready when you are
Get a quoteCedar & Soot is a local chimney service for wood-burning homes in Deschutes County. That means short drives, schedules that hold, and a sweep who knows what a Bend winter does to a masonry stack. If you are outside the towns listed, send the address anyway — we will tell you straight if it is too far.
04 — The work
Chimney work is mostly invisible. These are the parts you would see if you stood on the roof or knelt at the hearth — the tools, the liner, the firebox after a clean.
Whether it is a standard sweep, a stove, or a liner that has finally given up, the answer starts the same way: the address and a photo. From there we can quote it properly.
