How every project starts

The process

Five phases, from first sketch to final screw.

You always know which phase your piece is in and what happens next. Drawings come before cutting, and nothing is installed until it has been dry-fitted in the shop.

Phase 01

Consult — we start in your room

A design consult at your place, tape measure in hand. We look at how the space is used, where the light lands, and what has to stay.

  • Wall widths, ceiling heights and floor levels
  • Outlets, vents, radiators and door swings
  • What you need to store, seat or display

Phase 02

Design — you see it before we cut

Scaled drawings of the piece in your room, with the joinery and materials marked. Finish samples come with us so you can hold them against your own light.

  • Elevations and plan views, drawn to scale
  • Material and finish options, shown in your space
  • Revisions until the drawing is right

Phase 03

Build — milled, cut and dry-fitted

The workshop phase. Reclaimed boards are cleaned up and milled, joinery is cut, and the whole piece is assembled once on the bench before it ever reaches your wall.

  • Reclaimed wood milled and matched board by board
  • Joinery cut and fitted by hand
  • Dry assembly, then sanding and finishing

Phase 04

Install — fitted, scribed, finished in place

Built-ins arrive in sections and go in level and plumb. Edges are scribed to your walls, fronts are aligned, and the last coat is applied after fitting where it's needed.

  • Level, plumb and scribed to uneven walls
  • Fronts, drawers and doors adjusted on site
  • Delivered across Asheville and the surrounding area

Phase 05

Enjoy — built to be lived on and refinished

A dining table that gets used every night, a bench that takes wet coats, shelves that hold real books. When it needs care years from now, we refinish it rather than replace it.

  • Care notes for solid wood and oiled finishes
  • Refinishing for pieces worth keeping
  • Repair and adjustment down the line

Joinery

Every joint is drawn before it is cut.

Drawings carry the details that make a piece hold up: how a drawer runs, how a table top is allowed to move, how a shelf is fixed so it can be taken out again. It is slower on paper and faster in the shop.

  • 01
Interlocking joinery Drawer corners and frame joints cut to interlock, so a piece stays tight as the seasons move.
  • 02
Movement allowance Solid tabletops and panels are detailed with room to move — no splitting, no rattling.
  • 03
Serviceable connections Fixings drawn so a shelf or a front can come off for repair or refinishing later.

Materials

The wood comes first, then the drawing.

Reclaimed stock is what we reach for when a piece should look like it has always been in the room. Where a top needs to be flat, straight and quiet, we use solid hardwood instead.

Reclaimed

Reclaimed wood, board by board

Salvaged boards and beams, cleaned up and milled in the workshop — used for benches, built-in faces and shelves with history in them.

Hardwood

Solid tabletops

Dining tables built from solid stock, sized to your room and to how many people actually sit down at it.

Finish

Finishes you can hold

Samples travel to the design consult so you can see colour and sheen against your own walls and windows before anything is made.

Repair

Built to be refinished

We refinish existing furniture as well as new work — pieces worth keeping, kept in use rather than replaced.
