Reading tutoring · SAT math prep · Homeschool portfolios

Bring us the kid who says they hate reading.

One student. One tutor. Two chairs. Sessions in a small studio in Asheville, North Carolina — starting with a free assessment.

What we teach

Two chairs,
five ways to use them.

Every service happens one to one. Each row below reads as a pair: what the student does, and what the tutor does about it.

  1. 01

    1:1 reading tutoring

The studentReads out loud and stops wherever it stops.

The tutorMarks the stop, and builds the next session around it.

  2. 02

    SAT math prep

The studentWorks problems against the clock.

The tutorWatches where the time goes, then takes the problem apart.

  3. 03

    Homeschool portfolio review

    The studentBrings the year's work.

The tutorReads it, and writes it up plainly in one document you keep.

  4. 04

    Summer literacy intensive

The studentKeeps reading through June and July.

The tutorKeeps the work moving while school is out.

  5. 05

    Monthly parent progress reports

    The studentKeeps showing up.

The tutorWrites down what changed, and sends it home.

Packages are bought in blocks, one subject at a time. Reading and math do not have to be bought together.

The studio

A table, a window, and two chairs that don't match.

It is a small studio on purpose. One student at a time, in a room where nothing is being performed for anybody else.

A page, a pencil, a morning.

We keep the room quiet and the numbers small. If a kid reads slowly, we read slowly. If a kid freezes on a math problem, we go back until we find the piece that is missing. There is no audience here.

How it works

The first visit is free.

  1. 01

    The free assessment

You bring your kid. We read a little, work a few problems, and ask what school has been like lately.

  2. 02

    A straight answer

You leave with a short, plain note on where the hard part is and what we would work on first.

  3. 03

    A package, if it fits

Packages are bought in blocks, one subject at a time. If tutoring is not the right fit, we will tell you.

  4. 04

    Reports, every month

A written progress report comes home while you are still working with us, not only at the end.

Parent progress reports

Once a month, a report comes home.

Every package includes a written report, every month, while the work is happening. It is short and specific, and it answers the question you are already asking at the dinner table. For homeschooling families it becomes a record you can keep.

Included with tutoring packages. Homeschool portfolio reviews are written up the same way, as one plain document you keep.

Cedar & Quill · Progress report One page, monthly

What a report covers

  • 01What we worked on this month.
  • 02What your kid can do now that they could not do before.
  • 03Where the sticking points still are.
  • 04What we will try next.

Written by your tutor, sent home every month.
