The first class

Seven steps from the door to your first arrow.

This is the order a first session goes in. Read it here, or skip it and let it happen to you on the line — either way, nothing is expected of you but showing up.

  1. Walk in

You'll hear arrows before you see anything. Nobody turns around to look at you. Someone hands you a bow and asks if you've done this before — say no.

What you'll need Nothing. Come as you are.

  2. Take the bow

Bow in the hand you don't write with. The string crosses your fingers like you're holding a book open, and an instructor checks your grip before you go any further.

What you'll need Closed-toe shoes. Loose sleeves get in the way.

  3. Stand at the line

Shoulder-width, side-on to the target, both feet planted on the same mark. Almost everything that happens afterwards is decided right here.

  4. Nock the arrow

The arrow clicks onto the string with the odd feather facing you. It looks wrong. It's supposed to look wrong — that's how you know it's on.

  5. Draw

Pull until your hand finds the corner of your jaw and your elbow settles level with the arrow. Slow is not the same as weak.

Hands drawing a recurve bowstring back to the corner of the jaw with an arrow nocked
Step five — the anchor point
  6. Release

Let the string slip out of your fingers — don't let go of it. The bow does the rest, and your hand ends up somewhere behind your ear.

  7. Your first arrow

It goes somewhere. Maybe not where you meant, and that's the point of a first arrow. Then you nock another one before anybody tells you to.

And that's it Seven steps, one class, one arrow in the target. Everything after that is just more arrows.
