Courses · Cabin stays · Cody, Wyoming

Learn it in the saddle, in the river, over the fire.

Broken Arrow Ranch teaches horseback riding, cattle drives, fly fishing, ranch cooking and rodeo clinics in the places they happen — the arena, the pasture, the river, the cook fire. Cabins sit on the ranch, so a single course can turn into a week.

Slow is a speed — ask anyone who has moved cattle.

The course list

Five things
you can learn here.

Take one, or string a few together across a week. Instruction happens where the skill lives: in the arena, out in the pasture, standing in the river, at the fire.

  1. 01

    Horseback riding

Reins, seat and balance, and how to read the ground in front of you. Start in the arena and ride out from there.

  2. 02

    Cattle drives

Move the herd at a walk. Where to sit in the line, how to work a flank, and why the slowest pace wins.

  3. 03

    Fly fishing

Casting, reading the current, and the patient work of choosing a fly and tying it on.

  4. 04

    Ranch cooking classes

The kitchen is a fire ring and a cast-iron pan. Cook what the country gives you, outside, with your hands.

  5. 05

    Rodeo clinics

Groundwork, control and confidence in the arena, taught one skill at a time.

Off the clock

The river at noon.
The fire by dark.

Between lessons there is a ranch to be on: horses to brush out, a river to stand in, and supper to cook over coals.

reading the current, mid-morning.

The river runs cold and clear, and the mornings are the quietest hours on it. Waders help. So does standing still long enough to watch where two currents meet.

Cast iron pan cooking over coals at camp in the evening
supper, from one pan and a fire.

Cooking over coals is a skill like any other: feel the heat with your hand instead of a dial, salt earlier than feels right, and then let it sit.

Cabin stays

A porch, a stove,
and a very dark night.

Somewhere to come back to after a day in the saddle: plain, warm, and a long way from anywhere else.

A ranch cabin at dusk with warm lamplight in the window
the porch light on, last light off the hills.

The cabins are plain and warm: a wood stove, a bed with wool blankets, and a table made for writing things down.

Stay a night between courses, or make a cabin your base for the week. Bring a warm layer for the evenings and a book for the afternoons.
