Bascomb Supply & Hardware Plan the trip

Aisle index — Bascomb Supply & Hardware

Everything in the aisle, before you leave the house.

An index to the store: what's on the shelves, what's under cover in the yard, what's ready on the rental rack. Read it first, and the drive out is a stop instead of a search.

Aisle index

The store, set out like a contents page.

Six departments, in the order you'd walk them. Skim the list to see whether the drive is worth it, then read the department pages below for what's actually on the shelf.

  1. i

    Lumber & Building Materials

Dimensional lumber and sheet goods, stacked by dimension and kept dry.

  2. ii

    Paint & Paint Mixing

Colour matched in store from whatever sample you can carry in.

  3. iii

    Keys & Key Cutting

House keys, padlocks and spares, cut at the counter while you wait.

  4. iv

    Tool Rental

The tools a job needs once. Booked ahead and set aside for the day.

  5. v

    Plumbing

Fittings, valves, pipe and the small brass part nobody can name.

  6. vi

    Electrical

Wire, boxes, switches and fixtures for the job that started small.

  7. vii

    Contractor Accounts

A trade account, a running list, and one place for the paperwork.

02 — Before you drive out

Hours, the yard, and what's ready to rent.

The practical part of the trip: when to come, where to pull in with a trailer, and what to ask the counter to have waiting.

Hours

Store hours change with the season, and the board by the door is the one that counts. Call the counter before a long drive and we'll tell you where today stands.

Directions

We're in Rutland, Vermont. If you're hauling a trailer or a long load, say so when you set off and we'll have it ready to walk straight out to the truck.

The yard

Lumber, sheet goods and the bulky things live outside, under cover where it matters. Send the list ahead and it will be pulled before you're on the road.

Rentals

Tools go out for the job in front of you. Describe the work and we'll have the right one waiting at the counter — and tell you what you can leave behind.

03 — The departments

Walk them in order, or skip to the one you need.

Most of the questions we get start in one of these six places. If what you're after isn't here, the counter will point you to it.

Lumber & building materials

The yard is the honest part of the store.

Lumber stacked by dimension, sheet goods kept dry, and the short quantities a repair actually asks for. Bring the list — a cut list is better — and we'll pull it while you're on the road.

Paint & paint mixing

Bring the bit of colour you're trying to match.

A chip, a shutter, the back of a cabinet door that never quite matched the wall — we'll match it at the shaker and mix it while you wait.

Keys & key cutting

House keys, padlocks, and the spare you keep meaning to get cut.

Bring the old key — worn brass is no trouble. Cutting happens at the counter, so it's a stop on the way out rather than a second trip.

Rental tools shelved in a dim aisle, each tagged for the counter

Tool rental

The tools a job needs once and not for a lifetime.

Rentals go out for the work in front of you, booked ahead so the tool is on the counter when you get here. Tell us the job and we'll say what to take.

Plumbing & electrical

Fittings, valves, wire and boxes — one aisle apart.

Plumbing carries the answers for leaks, supply lines and the small brass part nobody can name but everybody needs at nine at night. Electrical is the quieter one: wire, boxes, switches and fixtures for the job that started small.

04

Trade counter

Contractor accounts, and a counter that keeps the list.

If the truck is your office, the counter should work like one. A contractor account keeps the materials, the ordering and the paperwork in one place, so a supply stop stays a stop and not an afternoon.

Ask at the counter and we'll set it up.

Ask about a trade account
  1. i

    Set up the account

Come in, tell us the business, and we'll open the account at the counter.

  2. ii

    Send the list ahead

Give us the materials before you set off and they'll be pulled and waiting when you arrive.

  3. iii

    Keep it on one account

Charges run to the account rather than out of a pocket, and the running list stays in one place.

05

End of the index

Check the aisle. Then make the drive.

Read the index, decide what you need, and come in knowing where it lives. If it's a long haul, one call to the counter settles the rest.

Stock

Everyday stock moves. If it's a single item you're driving out for, ask the counter to put it aside.

Rentals

Book a tool ahead for the day you need it and it will be tagged and waiting.

The trade

Contractor accounts, lists sent ahead, and materials pulled before you arrive.

Stock and store hours change with the season. A quick word with the counter before a long drive is always worth it.
